Jairo Johnny Yunbo Tapuy, 15, works on homework at his home along Via Auca in a Rumipamba a Quechua Community. Maria Tapuy, his mother, says she’s lived in the same house for 17 years before moving from Sacha. Maria remembers when Texaco was operating in the region and would spray crude oil along Via Auca to keep dust down. Often times the rain water would run off the road and into their local streams and rivers, which provided the people with drinking water. Jairo’s father died 5 years ago from cancer and Maria has little money to afford the surgery needed for his deformed hand, which would cost $1,000 USD. Jairo says he suffers from pain in his left arms and he cannot work on the families land as most other young men do in the region.
