"Venice Carneval"

Sinister costumes are also part of the carnival. The masks disguise the social status of the person wearing them. The Venetians managed to turn social order upside down during the carnival. Christianity licensed a period of celebration from Twelfth Night until the midnight of Shrove Tuesday, when debauchery was celebrated. But the Doges - the leaders of Venice - passed laws limiting the use of masks to within the carnival period; if a person wore a mask at any other time of year, penalties were severe.
