Malecaj. Many families from the north of the country
live in this ex penal colony. Unemployment is very high here and the only
sources of income are the gathering of wild sage and sheep-herding. Albania
is a country in which great tensions are at play: an economy largely based on
funds sent back home by emigrants, a State that is too weak and often corrupt
to guarantee even the most basic rights, a society where the law of the
fittest prevails, one where power is seized at whatever the cost counterbalanced
by an air of resignation and a desire to flee to other countries.
