A humpback whale dives on a snowy day along the Western Antarctic Peninsula. Each summer, thousands of whales migrate to their summer feeding grounds along the peninsula, where they feed on krill before returning north to their breeding grounds. NSF funded scientists were surprised to find so many whales still in the region in the late fall.
