"A CRY FOR THE TIGER"

Forested tiger habitat burned for palm oil plantations in Aceh, Sumatra. Across the island, the forest is being cleared for both industrial-scale plantations and for the small, five-hectare plots offered to Javans who relocate here. Habitat and prey are already scarce for the critically endangered Sumatran tiger—which could become the next tiger subspecies to go extinct. A study conducted on palm oil plantations found that some tiger prey species will live within the plantations, but tigers do not.
