In 1900 Queenstown was the third-largest town in Tasmania, but after 20 more years of copper and silver mining the rainforested hills around the town had been stripped bare to feed the furnaces. Uncontrolled pollution from the smelters was killing any vegetation that hadn't been cut down. In 1969 the smelters closed though some mining continues.
