"THE HUMAN TOLL: MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL MINING"

A blast is shot off on a mountaintop removal site in eastern Kentucky. Once the smoke settles, heavy equipment will move in to gather the coal and discard of the other rock and rubble created. Each day in Appalachia 4 million pounds of explosives are used in this form of mining to extract coal. Mining companies say this practice is cheaper and more efficient than traditional underground mining.
