"THE BURDEN OF LEAD: WEST DALLAS FEELS IGNORED AFTER YEARS OF DESPAIR"

David Shanks brushed the dust from his horse Luther before riding him after church services along Muncie Avenue in West Dallas where David was raised and now attends church. Most exposure to lead comes from a person's hands touching contaminated soil then touching the mouth, nose or eyes. The soil around the Liberty in Christ House of God recently tested high for lead contamination - higher than acceptable levels - indicating it is an unsafe area for children. In addition to a garden kept and tilled by church members, Mr. Shanks keeps his horses in a corral on the same property.
