"Hungry Planet"

1 of 10

"Australia, One Week's Food" The Brown family with a week's worth of food in their kitchen (approximately $387 USD) in Riverview, Australia. This family is one of 30 in 24 countries photographed for a self-assigned book project, Hungry Planet: What the World Eats, Fall 2005.

For the first time in the history of our planet more people are overfed than underfed. At the same time, we are witnessing the greatest change in global diets since the invention of agriculture ten thousand years ago. How are these extraordinary transformations working out on family dinner tables? To portray this juncture in our history, we (myself and my wife, Faith D'Aluisio, a writer) visited 30 families in 24 countries on every continent but Antarctica, talking with them over the cooking fire, accompanying them to food markets and stores, sharing meals whenever possible. At the end of our visit, we created a portrait of each family, surrounded by a week's worth of food. The results (including detailed grocery lists of the week's food with prices; family recipes; and personal field notes will be published in a book, Hungry Planet: What The World Eats, to appear in fall 2005.
