"Gangs of Moresby - Raskol 1" Gang member, Omsy. Kaugere Settlement, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. January 2004. This photo story is on one of the largest gangs in Papua New Guinea. It is series of gang member portraits taken in the gang's safe house or club house. Each person was asked to stand in front of the camera and pose as they are in any way they saw fit. No instructions were given to them during shooting, I photographed them just as they were. The portraits represent a section of Papuan society who are caught between tribal tradition and western influences. They are mostly unemployed youths who steal to provide for food in their close knit community. Displacement, boredom and unemployment has pushed 80% of young Papuans into crime. The Economist this year voted Papua New Guinea the most unlivable capital in the world. Along with high crime rates the gangs are responsible for the increase in HIV/Aids, as the rape statistics are one of the highest in the world.
