"We were living in Canada until I was 25, we were living on a farm, most Mennonites were, but it wasn’t like here we had cars and everything, I’d never worked with horses until I was 25.Then our forefathers said to us what could happen when our children will go to public schools, and they got the idea of moving to a different country where we would be able to live the life, you know, as Mennonites. So we went to Belize for 10 years, but there wasn’t enough farm land. It is a troubled country, it’s not for the Mennonite way of life really, too many of us were working outside the colony, anywhere. It’s not for the young people to stay out of the colony so they can be influenced to live the life of the natives.Well, it’s not difficult such a change if you want to. If you’re forced, it’s different, but if you choose it... The Mennonite belief it’s chosen, nobody can force you to live it. You wouldn’t be accepted."Franz Banman, 63
