"ZACH'S JOURNEY"

Summary: In the past year, Zack Thibodeaux's eyesight has deteriorated rapidly, the result of a condition called cone-rod dystrophy that will leave him mostly or totally blind. In preparation for a life of sightlessness, the gifted 8-year-old has been learning to walk with a cane and seeking the help from others while they hope for a cure. His parents have taken him to places he wanted to see, including New York and the Statue of Liberty, before he can’t do so.

Using a blind fold to mimic being blind, 8 yr-old Zack Thibodeaux uses a cane to navigate his way around NorthPark Center, February 26, 2011. Zack has been tutored by his orientation and mobility specialist Alexa McIntyre to prepare him for a life without sight.
