Nyaung Nyaung (not her real name) is 19 years old and from northern Burma (Myanmar). She lives and works in a massage salon which doubles as a brothel near the harbor in Rangoon. The girls often live in the massage salons and only get time once or twice a year to visit their families. Poverty-fuelled prostitution is not uncommon in Burma where the influx of girls from the poor families is constant and so is the risk of HIV/AIDS. Knowledge of the decease is low and so is condom use. For HIV infected Burmese it is extremely difficult to get access to treatment and for most affected people a positive diagnosis equals death sentence.
