As the world's population rises most rapidly in the places where life is most precarious, hundreds of millions of people live on the edge of starvation. Scientists are struggling to find ways to boost Earth's agricultural output, but by midcentury, when there will be at least 2 billion more mouths to feed, production may simply be insufficient.
