Thomas Brenner gives Ian the shaving-cream treatment. Troops aren't supposed to sleep during the day, and when one does, he usually becomes prey to the platoon's antics. Eight weeks into basic training the troops have some freedom. Ian often uses the time to write letters to his dad, his mom and a friend named Kayla he knew from Lakewood. He hadn't heard from his girlfriend, Ashley, but he was surprised when he received a letter from Kayla.
