In
the Little Saigon area of Southern California, store owner Truong Van
Tran did the unthinkable. Where nearly 200,000 Vietnamese refugees fled
from communist rule, Tran decided to display a poster of reviled leader
Ho Chi Minh and Red flag. Tran tried to explain that he was merely demonstrating
the liberties allowed in the United States. But this was a liberty the
community would not tolerate. In defiance of police orders, they blockaded
his store and attacked him whenever he tried to return. What started
as an action against Tran's provocative act, evolved into something
more. A slowly assimilating community was brought together as they relived
their past suffering. Tran's eventual eviction brought a small measure
of closure to their pains.
